It’s been hard to avoid what’s been going on around the world the past few weeks and we decided it was important to share grounding techniques to help reduce the intense energy in our world. While the world is in a place of fear, it’s so important for you to find time to ground your energy during this time of unease. There is so much anxiety, so much fear and uncertainty in all of us right now in regards to what is happening with the coronavirus (or COVID-19). For so many of us, our lives have been completely uprooted and we are supposed to be practicing “social distancing” – it’s certainly knocked us out of our normal routines.

Grounding during unease

With everything going on, it is especially important that you take the time to ground your energy and to focus on your own mental, physical, and spiritual self-care. Afterall, you can’t pour from an empty glass. Staying grounded means that even in the face of uncertainty, you are able to stay calm and connected to what is happening in the present. It helps you pull away from negative emotions and create a space where you can continue to thrive. Taking a step back and energetically connecting with Mother Nature is exactly what grounding is — by sending your anxious energy back into Earth and allowing the calm steady energy she has to offer come over you – allows you to experience the benefits of grounding in its simplest form.

It’s not hard to ground yourself, nor does it really require any special equipment or training. One of the most basic ways to ground yourself is simply through breathwork.

Try it right now.

Close your eyes and slowly inhale for 5 seconds, then exhale for 5 seconds. Repeat for several cycles. If it helps, you can say or think “in” and “out” with each breath. Feel each breath filling your lungs and note how it feels to push it back out.

How did that feel? Good right?

Benefits of Grounding

What are the benefits of Grounding your energy?

It’s been shared through many scientific studies grounding our energy has many benefits; better sleep, decrease in anxious and fearful energy, balanced and clear mind, boost immunity, feeling more centered and stronger and reduced stress levels.

There are many more benefits and we encourage you to journal your experience as you try some of these grounding techniques.

Another easy way to ground yourself is to take a short walk around your neighborhood or even your backyard. Enjoying nature and the fresh air is one of the easiest ways to reconnect with ourselves and to refill our cup. Nature has the power to release you from unwanted energies and also to charge yourself with positive energy. Seeing other people out and about as well, even if you aren’t able to get close to them, is very refreshing when we are faced with such isolation. It allows you to remember that you aren’t alone in this and that this too shall pass.

Take some time for yourself right now, whether that looks like curling under a blanket with a good book for 30 minutes or a nice bubble bath with a few drops of a grounding essential oil like cedarwood or cypress.

Enjoy these grounding techniques!

  • Meditation
  • Work with soil/ dirt (get out and garden)
  • Get physical – physical activity can help remove toxins from our system
  • Eat grounding foods (root vegetables)
  • Take a cold shower (cold exposure has shown to elevate mood)
  • Drink more water

Hopefully when this is all over, we will have found a closer sense of community and have a better sense of how we handle a crisis. Use this time as an opportunity to grow, to learn a new skill, or to focus on strengthening a family bond.
